Smith Brothers of Berne

Nestled in the heart of this magnificent country, lies the small town of Berne, Indiana. Set apart from the fast paced, trend chasing city centers, you are more likely to hear the clip clop of horse feet than sirens or blaring horns. Fields stretch across the horizon and time-honored traditions govern daily life. It is here that a sense of pride in quality craftsmanship grows deep. This community, who’s rich history has instilled integrity and respected values, is the foundation for Smith Brothers upholstery.

Every decision here is made with a heart for people. Whether it be the quality of lumber framing the furniture or the types of games to be played at the company picnic, it all comes down to doing what is right, not only for the customer, but for the family of employees.

This is why nothing, but the best is considered when it comes to sourcing components for each and every Smith Brothers piece. Hardwood maple, steel coil springs, highest quality foam, gorgeous textiles, top grain leathers and more are all selected for their strength, durability, and beauty. Each sofa, chair, or ottoman is designed to be a treasured part of a home for years to come. Click here to visit their website.

Mavin

American Made Furniture, from forest to fabrication. Located in the rolling farmland of Ohio’s Amish country, Palettes by Winesburg is a third generation of lumber specialists who hand-select the best of the cherry, oak, maple, walnut or hickory tree to bring you our quality products. Our family selects and harvests the timber, shapes it in our own sawmill, and then carefully checks it in our own dry kilns. We know the building of solid wood furniture from its roots. Winesburg Lumber had its origins as a two-man logging operation more than three generations ago. As the younger generation became a part of this growing organization they felt that diversification was a path for future success and growth, and so we began building doors and contract grade chairs. This has evolved into one of the most complete custom dining lines in the country. We are proud of the furniture we produce. Click here to visit their website.

Bassett®

Our rich heritage is a source of great pride for us. It’s a story that goes back to 1902, when furniture making was shifting from local cabinet makers to larger scale production to keep up with the growth of America.

If you want to know how it all began, we have to take you back to late 1800s in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to an area northwest of Martinsville, Virginia. The Bassett family was running a sawmill that supplied rail ties for the new Norfolk & Western line that was being built through the family property. In 1892, the rail line was completed and the family began looking for markets for its lumber.

John David “J.D.” Bassett was making a good living traveling the countryside selling goods for general stores when he began carrying lumber samples from the mill. He quickly made his first sale of lumber to a coffin company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and returned home with the knowledge of the growing furniture industry and the subsequent demand for raw lumber.

Today, Bassett remains committed to the early principles of the company … that great quality, stylish furniture does not need to be expensive and should be available to everyone. A visit to one of our stores and you’ll see just how committed we are to that idea. Click here to visit their website.

Jenny McKellar Photography

I discovered my love for photography at Western Michigan University, where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. I since then became passionate about nature photography when I moved from Grand Rapids to Traverse City in 2005. I currently live in Leelanau County with my husband and two boys, with whom I love to rock hunt, hike, kayak, and explore our beautiful area.

I have a few things going for me that help me get great shots: technical knowledge and an artistically-trained eye from my schooling, a nice Nikon camera, and a whole lot of patience. But I believe nature photography is ultimately serendipitous. My favorites shots, the ones that actually capture the essence of that day/ place/ moment/ memory, the ones that paint a story that I didn’t even know was there, only happen when I’m having fun!

Please email me for other print sizes or special requests! You may see some of my photos in area businesses and restaurants, and many can be purchased at Golden Fowler Home Furnishings. I really love doing local shows where I can actually make a connection with people and talk to them about my work. Look for me at the Downtown Traverse City art fairs and several others every summer. And be sure to follow me on Facebook to see my latest ventures! Click here to visit her website.
